Then I assume all those packages are using SourceDirectory. So we were lucky (or unlucky, depending on how one views it) :). But the attached trivial .info file is, I think, what the normal package author would write when trying to use an .xz tarball... and it errors out in a strange way, as described in my initial posting. So, I still very much think this is a bad bug that should be fixed ASAP.
