I am not an expert but we may be able to drop some of the older versions if the new ones will build on all systems.

I am neutral on hg v. Git debate, as far as I am concerned it takes all kinds to fill the freeways.  Your solution should be fine to clone the repository.  I think the git repository was posted previously, but I use https://github.com/fink/fink-distributions.git <https://github.com/fink/fink-distributions.git> as an upstream repository.
