The ultimate package you're trying to build really doesn't matter.  If  
a package fails somewhere along the way it should fail regardless of  
what you're eventually trying to get to.

oops... I renamed the thread because the failure was with gtk+2 rather  
than g3data, and so the solution doesn't show up there.
