Ah -- there, at least, we're in good shape.  In my ~/.x-startup file, I
explicitly source /sw/bin/init.sh before starting the gnome settings
daemon.  And that isn't new; I've had that for a while.

It's a little early to say, but I *think* that a reboot solved the
problem.  (I'm not clear why, as I didn't think that installing Xquartz
required a reboot, just a logout and login, but whatever.)

In the interests of reproducible results:
  - I updated to 10.5.6.
  - I started gnucash, which failed with a libXdamage error.
  - I re-installed Xquartz 2.2.3.
  - I logged out & logged back in, then started gnucash.  This could not
    find preferences.
  - I started gnome-settings-daemon manually, which failed as described
    earlier.
  - All of the above was on my desktop, but I was able to repeat it
    (roughly speaking) on my laptop.
  - After a couple of power cycles on the laptop (required because I was on
    a plane, not for software issues), I started gnucash, and it seems to
    be able to find stuff without difficulty.  These power cycles are
    graceful shutdowns, not forced resets.

I haven't yet tried rebooting the desktop, and I don't want to try that
remotely, since I'm not sure what effect it'll have on the VNC server.  But
I'm optimistic that it'll work when I return home in a few days.
