I have discontinued use of lpd (not only because of its 
questionable security but because the printers I use have built-in 
implementations), but I still use lpr extensively. Even if it 
doesn't keep lpd in the base install, Freebsd - like any OS - 
should have the ability to print "out of the box" without 
installing a port, especially a GPLed port. That means keeping lpr 
or a BSD-licensed equivalent.
