Seems legit to me. But what do you say to:

commit 7e30426f3b53f0e0fa4bb4653d34f234e64aa22f
Author: Bryan Drewery <[email protected]>
Date: Wed Mar 26 13:41:30 2014 +0000

Revert r263638 (create /root dataset) for now as it breaks install and
needs
more work in cases such as single-user mode.

Notes:
    svn path=/head/; revision=263768

Have you tried single user boot? Seems to me it would work, but /root wouldn't
be there, but you can just mount it, so I'm not sure what the more work that's
needed.
