Interesting. Updating kernel and world on a bare metal Power9 system
works without a problem:
FreeBSD blackbird.testbed 16.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 16.0-CURRENT #1 main-n284938-aacf448007f7: Thu Apr  9 15:54:05 CEST 2026     [email protected]:/usr/obj/usr/home/tuexen/freebsd-src/powerpc.powerpc64/sys/TCP powerpc

Even scp'ing a 4GB file to the machine worked.

What network interface are you using in the VM?
