on my system:

virtio_pci1: <VirtIO PCI (legacy) Network adapter> port 0x20-0x3f mem 0x81030000-0x81030fff,0x210000000000-0x210000003fff irq 4610 at device 2.0 numa-domain 0 on pci0
vtnet0: <VirtIO Networking Adapter> numa-domain 0 on virtio_pci1
vtnet0: Ethernet address: 52:54:00:12:34:56
vtnet0: netmap queues/slots: TX 1/256, RX 1/128
000.000056 [ 452] vtnet_netmap_attach vtnet attached txq=1, txd=256 rxq=1, rxd=128

the host is:

QEMU emulator version 10.1.3
Copyright (c) 2003-2025 Fabrice Bellard and the QEMU Project developers

i'm currently building latest main (which takes a while) to see if that works
any better.

i was able to netcat over a copy of src.tar.gz (2.2GB), which decompressed
fine, suggesting the basic networking functionality is okay.
