It's connected to a switch.

I did a different check yesterday:
with WOL off in BIOS the LEDs of the NIC are off when suspended.
with WOL on  in BIOS the LEDs of the NIC are "on" when suspended and one blinks
when I send the wake magic packet.

To be honest, I have not tried wake when the machine was powered off.
I'll try when I get to the keyboard.
