I tend to disagree on the portability of python. There is no Python 2.6
for my osf1 4.0 systems for instance but perl and tcl build fine ;-)

Having looked at the build log it looks like avoiding python during package
build is next to impossible. But the installed files are useless on 
NetBSD for instance where there is neither a working Java nor a gdb in
pkgsrc that could use the python helper functions for libstdc++. If installing these files would be a non-default option then installing gcc
as a binary package would have no need to install python as a dependency.
