booting from HD, X server for 712 (King Gecko)?

hi list,

i'm searching for a quiet and energy saving X workstation, and my 712
seems to fit best into this role (at least, from my hardware collection).

i saw that recently booting from HD was added; i have two questions on this:

i) is it sufficient to dd 'netinstall.lif' to the HD then built into the
machine to boot it?

ii) is X running/useable?
