with the installer I tried unpacking modules.tgz half a dozen times, no 
avail!
I rebooted into the installed system in single user mode.

I did a

  tar xzvpf home/install/modules.tgz

should be correct? It worked without errors.

I wonder... something different from the sysinst? does it use pax? 
perhaps? weird.
