Even though there is a fair bit of swap free I wouldn't put it past GCC
to have gobbled that up in the time it takes before top could update the
counts.  It's already swallowed half what's still free in swap, with
only about 1/3 of that resident.

It still probably shouldn't have locked up, and there should have been a
message on the console, but....

Was that building devel/pcre, or devel/pcre2?
