Grmpf. I found (and fixed) the problem. It was a classic case
of PEBKAC -- I thought I had updated the box the right way (tm)
but failed... Sorry for the noise guys. For the archives: if your
hme0 disappears, make *sure* your binaries are a) in sync with your
kernel and b) really installed to / and not /some/where/else ;)
