I have Haiku running in Qemu, If you're using some Linux distribution VMWare might even be a better choice. I wouldn't advise to start with one of the tasks we proposed to Jan and his colleagues; those were chosen because they would roughly fit the 3 x 8 weeks student time. One or two task taking a few days max should be better suited to get you started. I don't have anything like this among my open tickets, but I'm sure Axel will have more than enough tasks.
