This is not a problem of the system, but rather from the software you 
are using to play the DVD.
The only role the system plays in this is how often the CD driver will 
retry before giving up - which may take more time than you can accept 
in this situation. But since only the DVD player
knows about this requirement (which is very different from the usual 
case), it should not just read from the CD, but tell the system either 
not to retry in case of error, or should talk to the CD device directly 
using SCSI where you can let it do exactly what you need for proper 
playback.
