BWX on alpha is Byte Word eXtension, which is if I remember correctly, a set of 6 new instructions introduced with the EV56. Those instructions enable the alpha to load/store data in 8 or 16 bits (before that, the alpha could only load/store 32 or 64 bits at a time).
