DS10L firmware doesn't see hard drive?

Hi. This is totally not an OpenBSD issue but an Alpha issue. Feel free
to ignore.


I have a DS10L, CD-ROM and hard drive, IDE.
The firmware doesn't seem to see the hard drive.
OpenBSD, NetBSD, Tru64 installers all see it and will write a bunch to it.
But show device only shows dqb0, no dqba0. I couldn't find a way to boot it.
   Perhaps indirectly via a floppy or CD or network? I'd rather not bother.

I went ahead and moved the CD-ROM to a second machine, essentially
giving up on this one and will sell it. But I'm still curious.
I might also try a different hard drive.

Both machines print an occasional "stray isa irq 14" or 15, I think in
both OpenBSD
and NetBSD.

Even on the second machine, where OpenBSD is now up and working, NetBSD
seems thrown off by those and stops booting and dumps me into single user mode.

OpenBSD sees a few "soft errors" and corrects them and downgrades from DMA or
another DMA mode or maybe PIO. Or so it seems. I think on either DS10L.

FreeBSD installer sees no hard drive and bails out.
  Gosh, I think even on the machine that is working with OpenBSD. I
don't remember.
  I'll try that again later once I finish the OpenBSD/alpha port.
  I think the VMS installer, on the less working machine, failed early
for lack of seeing the drive.


Any of this sound familiar? I did search the web some.
