The latter /usr is a copy created with a cp -Rf... command, then set to mount at boot in fstab in place of the original /usr, which, in turn, was suitably renamed with mv. It's only when the _copy_ of the original /usr is used at boot that I get the 'exec getty' loop that blocks the boot process. I don't know why and am stuck with having everything under / on sd0a until I do.
