Re: Quadra 660 disk problems

I found a fix to my problem.  It seems that the Quadra
av models have a SCSI bug in the ROM.  I was initially
able to initialize a drive by booting from a small
drive with the target set to a id of 1, then
formatting from the small drive.  I then changed the
scsi ID and tried to install.  I kept finding that the
drive would work for a bit, then suddenly lock and
start clicking.  

Apparently this is a problem with the Quadra 660 ROM
itself.  A patch exists for System 7.1 (The shipping
version for the 660) in Software Update 3.0 for System
7.1.  The problem stems from an issue with the cache
controller in the drive interfacing with the onboard
scsi controller.  I found this out digging through
newsgroups from a while ago.  There were only a few
references to this problem.  If anyone else has this
problem the Software Update is available on Apple's
Support site under the older downloads.  

Here are the steps I took to install.

-Install 7.5.3 on a small drive that is known to work
(my original drive 250meg)
-Install Apple Drive Setup 1.6 on the small drive
(available from the Apple Website)
-Hook the target drive into the scsi chain at an ID
other then 0
-Use Drive Setup to initialize the target drive. 
Setup the size of your MacOS partition, and leave the
rest untouched.
-Take the target drive and make it the main drive,
change scsi id to 0
-Install system 7.1 onto the HD, I used a floppy, but
cd would work too.
-Update system 7.1 with Software Update v3.0 from the
Apple Website
-Use a HD SC Setup to partition the drive (Someone
here recommended the A/UX SC version, I highly
recommend also)
-Install OpenBSD as per the install document.

Hopefully this will save someone the pain and torment
I went through to get this problem solved.  Best of
