Further news.... > ite at grf0 not configured > > the card itself is an Apple card. I have some other nubus cards spare, > some SuperMac spectrums I believe. > I put in one big Thunder card. I set it to 24 bit in macos. it still is set to 640x480 (I can't change the resolution in macos...) dmesg reports it as: macvid0 at nubus0: SuperMac Thunder/24 v1.16 macvid0: Unknown video card 0x2cb--Not installing interrupt routine. macvid0: 1024 x 768, monochrome grf0 at macvid0 ite at grf0 not configured which is wrong: the resolution is 640x480 (although the card can do 1024 for sure) X starts! it reports a display of 1024 but useful data is drawn on the screen, in 1bit only though. Also the screen is larger than what is shown (the mouse can go way to the right: it is a 640x480 portion of a 1024x768 sceen) well, the 1bit depth was caused by the booter, I set it to 24bit there now. I can't set the resolution of the card, it seems that "alt-esc" had to be pressed at startup to set supermac card resolution, but it doens't work. If I set the display to 24 in the booter, openbsd doesn't boot: it comes up with an inverted console (white on black) and then hangs right after the copyright line. I tried with a spectrum 8.24 and there too I have resolution setting problems (probbaly the card bioses clash with my roms or OS version... I clrealry rememebr that once I got a cycling resolution startup thing years ago...) and the console comes up inverted and hangs. I then tried my SpectrumIII which is 8bit only. Miracolously the resolution was already 1024 at startup (and the change menu didn't came up at all...) OpenBSD comes up with the correct colors in the console, but it will fail with printing slot_noint() slot c over and over on the screen so while desperation crept in I cannibalized all nubus cards I could get, from ohter comptuers, other people.... I found a historic piece called "apple high resolution card" from 1989 which is probably broken, since it makes 16 colors only even if VRAM is expanded and also menacing vertical lines appear in, so I jufge it as broken. I got another version of the "macintosh display card" which I already had... This time I boot it, still with it set at 640x480 but with the booter set to 24 bit. the console comes up, colors inverted and freezes at the copyright line. I set it to 256 colors, the console come sup normally and the card is reported as monochrome in dmesg. X makes again the wired horizonal patterned lines, but this time they are colored. cheers, Riccardo
