I just tried with a single drive, It failed, and at a quick glance, it looked like it failed exactly the same way. I'm nowhere near the machine right now, but I'll check it this evening, and if it isn't the same failure, I'll post dmesg/trace/ps Thanks to everyone who suggested this.
