Line Printing?

Hello,
	I admit I'm not very well-versed in the particulars of the lpd daemon.
I seem to be dealing with a fairly basic problem: namely, that the line printer that I've enabled and attached via SIMH Vax doesn't seem to be detected.  
I might be simply barking up the wrong tree in trying to print from the simulated VAX at all, but if I'm not I'd appreciate some information.  The /dev/lp file doesn't seem to exist--I'm a little puzzled.  Does that file normally get created by MAKEDEV?  Is it something I have to handle manually?  
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated,
