Open SSH on Windows

Hi OpenBSD Team,

I just wanted to take a moment to send you an update for the
http://www.openssh.com/windows.html page. OpenSSH runs on Windows NT-based
operating systems under the Interix subsystem. Interix is a Posix.1 and
Posix.2 compliant UNIX-like environment for the NT kernel which runs
parallel to the more famous client-server runtime subsystem (CSRSS or
Win32).

Microsoft acquired the technology from Softway Systems. It was formerly
known as OpenNT and in Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Vista and Longhorn
Server it has a marketing name of the Windows Subsystem for Unix-based
Applications. The version for Windows 2000 through Windows Server 2003
(non-R2) is bundled inside of the Services for UNIX 3.5 package.

You might be interested to know that OpenNT was originally based upon 4.4BSD
lite and the current Interix code base is heavily based on OpenBSD code.
Interix runs almost entirely as user mode services over the NT kernel,
similar to a microkernel architecture.

It's a mystery to my why Microsoft doesn't ship OpenSSH themselves. Instead,
it is maintained by Interopsystems which receives some subsidization from
Microsoft.
