I'd suggest considering this nonsense, unless real info is provided.
Lots of us have run various devices as slave devices without issue.

I suspect you have a Dell system.
For whatever reason, many Dells (and probably others) disable an IDE
port if no device is found at "master", they never bother to check
if there is a "slave" device in place.  OpenBSD doesn't alter the
system configuration, other OSs may.
