I have this problem somtimes. I own Compaq Evo N610c and it has the same
video card. Workaround i use for the flicker is to switch virtual
consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F? I've always suspected the radeon driver itself
so i'm not surprised that the problem exists in linux too. My laptop
OpenBSD installation has more serious problem that i think (but not
sure) is caused by the radeon too. It sometimes hangs. Completely. This
always happens after APM event like suspend/wakeup. Laptop works some
time and then freezes. I enabled kernel debuger key but it is not
detected when laptop hangs. I cannot connect from network too. Pressing
CapsLock does not toggle the LED. I'm suspecting the radeon video card
driver because almost always after suspend/wakeup i get the screen
flicking. Then I do my workaround with switching consoles. Some time
after that it hangs. In most cases it hangs when I write url in Mozilla
address bar. Sometimes when I simply scroll page in mozilla. Sometimes
when I press send buton of gaim conversation. I suspect memory
coruption. This is because i sometimes hear 'click' from speakers when I
write into mozilla addres bar. Now when I've switched to Galeon, I hear
it when scroling page. I also suspect that this is cpu load dependent
problem because mozilla displays suggestions for url when user is
writing into address bar. If anybody can give me directions how to find
exact location of the bug I'll do it. I'm looking for some kind of
logging or way to enter kernel debugger when the system 'hangs'.
