If an English teacher can compile it (sendmail 13.6), install it, and 
modify the code to a number of milters, you should not have many 
problems.  I have stayed with sendmail because the FreeBSD server I 
maintain uses it, and I wanted to learn TLS solutions for just the one 
program.  My OS X systems use the BSD server as a smart host, but I am 
running all the parts of sendmail, scheduled through launchd.

I haven't upgraded to 13.7 yet because there were some glitches others 
reported for which there are patches, but no new release.  I instead 
added the mime-fix milter that sendmail.org provided for 13.6.
