An old PowerMac 7600 has serial ports and they appear as /dev/cu.printer and /dev/cu.modem. If you set OpenFirmware somehow to use one of those two ports, they disappear in Mac OS X, however. So, the needed bits appear to be open sourced. I'd guess the next thing for you to check would be wether they appear in the OpenFirmware(-x86-equivalent) device tree. They have to, to be recognized by the OS. It's covered in one of Apple's Technical Notes how you can view the device tree in OpenFirmware. I've never tried in on x86, however.
