Just to throw a few thoughts into the discussion: How about making shadow images relative to the original install CD available? The user would merge it with her install CD already available to get a current install CD. This way, you'd have always a current CD handy - if you ever tried to install something like Mac OS X 10.2.8 trough 10.2.0 -> 10.2.1 -> ..., you probably know what's the benefit. Even with using the last combo updater, I had to install no less than 8 patches right after the initial install. Similar considerations apply to Darwin once there are updates available. This would encourage enhancing the update mechanism as well as you would use a full system installation CD to upgrade a existing system. Only the diffs between install CD and the system on HD would be touched, of course. A solution based on distributing binaries is to be preferred, IMHO, since this reduces hassle with adjusted/modified/customized build environments. Plus, it can be used when distributing closed source. Markus - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dipl. Ing. Markus Hitter http://www.jump-ing.de/
