On OpenDarwin, the ncutil command is very useful for configuring  
network locations properly, and it would be a good idea to use that.   
In fact, I filed an ER suggesting it get moved upstream into Apple  
Darwin - however this was in March (radar 4029941) so far too late to  
get into Tiger.

That's a zeroconf (in the Apple world: whatever Steve's current  
favourite French word is) address; i.e. your system is trying to use  
DHCP, doesn't find a server so falls back to assigning itself its own  
IP address.

Don't know, but AIUI the supported hardware has changed between  
darwins 7 and 8 on x86.
