apologies first, but to me, it is like saying "if you don't know that

Why do I want to do that? Simply, I do not want extra nicey nicey GUI 
stuffs that comes with Tiger. I am already satisfied with the GUI of 
Panther, or Jaguar (for the sake of argument). The problem that I have 
with OSX is that Apple installs many things, which are useful, including 
Python and Perl. But Apple does not maintains or upgrades them, same 
story with Java. So, I am using Fink to install a copy of Python which I 
can upgrade. I can't do the same for Java.

I have 2 systems, G4 1GHz and G4 733MHz. I am under the assumption that 
using Tiger on my "old" machines will just slow it down. But neither do 
I really want to drop back to pure OpenDarwin or Darwin. In fact, I've 
tried and is having trouble compiling some of my stuffs which compiles 
well in 10.3.

So now, Java aside, can I do a kernel upgrade, without changing the 
whole OSX? What are the differences between the kernel of Panther and 
Tiger or Jaguar and Panther that makes it better?
