You can (or at least could, some time in the past; I haven't tried it recently) build an xnu-for-i386 from the Darwin/ppc sources. What you can't do is build one that's compatible with the xnu in Mac OS X/i386. By extension you can't run Mac OS X binaries on an i386 xnu built from the publicly-available sources.
