Ha ha! That's just what happened to me. I won a Sony rear projection TV
a couple of years ago in an "end of life" tombola at work. Everyone was
quite jealous and I had lots of people saying things like "ah but I was
hoping to win that for my scout group/church/etc".

It was the best thing ever for watching movies on. Way too big for our
tiny house but very impressive, especially when we got a Wii and we
spent last christmas bowling.

Then it suddenly lost convergence. After a google search it seems it was
a known defect and could be fixed by obtaining some new chips (one for
each gun RGB) and soldering them in. Total cost about E400. 

We went to Makro (europes Walmart) and found a really sharp Philips flat
screen for the same price. 

I took the Sony to the dump and the council guys were distraught, "ah
but you must be able to fix it, such a shame to throw it away".
