OK, I am confused.
The last time i did updates, I downloaded a "recommended patch cluster" and ran it. I did have to get a free sunsolve account to do that. I could also download some individual patches (not new ones and not feature enhancements, IIRC)
From a quick scan of the web page

It looks like this is a new and different procedure to analyze problems and figure out which patches to download to solve them.
Recently , tried to load the recommended patch cluster, and entered my free sunsolve account, but was told I needed to obtain a sunsolve account and would need a contract number. Other responses seem to imply I can set up a free sunsolve account, which I presume should allow me to download recommended patch clusters from Sun. Could it just be that my sunsolve account expired and I need to create a new one, then I can go back to doing things the way I used to?
In my past life, I installed Solaris, applied recommended patch clusters, visited OTHER sites for security recommendations, and installed those patches, so I didn't need any diagnostic information from Sun web sites. On rare occasions a system would crash, we would call Sun and they would help us find what patches were needed. On my home system it is unlikely this kind of error would ever occur, so all I need to do is download recommended patch clusters and, if I get that far, a few more security patches.
