Solaris {8,9} userland and system administration being just too painful[1],
an overall preference for NetBSD, the need for an in-kernel pppoe client,
and finally pkgsrc on Solaris (Zoularis at the time) not really being
workable, but that was eight years ago...

[1] Which lead to a very stable system with looong uptimes, because
tinkering with it was no fun. ;)
