Thanks Andy! I suppose that I could have looked around in that directory before crying for help, but what can I say. It works as you suggested.

In retrospect, I suppose that the first paragraph of section 9.2 of the NetBSD Guide provides a subtle clue. However, not sure why there isn't a more explicit directive somewhere to choose the correct server. The NetBSD/sparc FAQ doesn't breath a word about this.

On the other hand, 'man Xsun' effectively displays information on the three Sun Xservers -- Xsun, XsunMono and Xsun24. One needs to read between the lines however in order to use Xsun24 instead in the case of an SS20 with cgfourteen. And also to realize that the default Xsun is a non-starter, since in my experience it always exits with the message "Bus error (core dumped) Xsun".
