Hello all,

Does anyone know if the widely grown variegated cultivar of Agave victoriae-reginae has a valid cultivar name?

The variegated culrivar of Agave victoriae-reginae has been around for a long time but it is not among those listed by Breitung (1960) Cact. & Succ. Journ. (U.S.) 32 (2): 35-37 (1960) or Gentry(1982). Unless a Latin form cultivar name for it was published in a catalog before January 1, 1959, any such name for it coined after that date would be invalid according to the Cultivated Code. All the names I have seen for it in catalogs have been in Latin form and consequently invalid.

The name Agave victoriae-reginae aureo-marginata is listed for it in the Glasshouse Works catalog while the same plant is named Agave victoriae-reginae aurea marginata by Nature's Curiosity Shop. Highland Succulents calls it Agave victoriae-reginae variegata while Grigsby's calls it Agave victoriae-reginae variegate. None of the names are valid.
