Dear Breck,

The name Agave scabra Ortega appeared in a rather obscure publication by the Spanish author and its rediscovery resulted in the name change of two different species of Agavaceae. The new species proposed by Ortega were not listed in Index Kewensis and had long been overlooked by European and American authors. That Jacobi had renamed Salm-Dyck's species is a result of coincidence and poor communication rather than intentionally correcting an error.

Agave asperrima Jacobi, Hamb. Gart. Zeit. 20: 561 (1864)
syn. Agave scabra Salm-Dyck, Bonplandia 7: 89 (1859) not Ortega (1797)
       Agave caeciliana A.Berger, Die Agaven 147 (1915)

Manfreda scabra (Ortega) McVaugh, Flora Novo-Galiciana 15: 234 (1989)
syn. Agave scabra Ortega, Decades 13 (1797)
Agave brachystachya Cavanilles, Descr. 453 (1802)
Manfreda brachystachys (Cavanilles) Rose, Contrib. U.S. Nat. Herb. 8: 20 (1903)
[The species has a much more extensive synonymy.]

Cereusly Steve

Dear Steverino, thanks for the heads-up on victoria instead of ferdinand. A
question: if Agave scabra was described by Ortega in 1797 and is not used,
when did Jacobi name it? 1797 is pretty damned early! :) Breck

  >Agave scabra Salm-Dyck (1859) is an invalid homonym of Agave scabra Ortega
  >(1797). The species is correctly named Agave asperrima Jacobi.
