Dear Breck, Close enough. Agave scabra Salm-Dyck in Gentry (1982) and the plant seen in collections under that name is correctly named Agave asperrima Jacobi. It is an Agave species with broad rough (or rarely smooth) leaves that is very common in the Chihuahuan desert of Mexico and adjacent Texas. Agave scabra Ortega is Manfreda scabra (Ortega) McVaugh, formerly known as Manfreda brachystachya (Cavanilles) Rose. Manfreda scabra is a bulbous species with deciduous leaves. It is widespread in southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador but seldom grown in collections. Dear Steve, let me see now. There is an Agave scabra Ortega, but it isn't what we have been calling Agave scabra? So, the agave that has been known as A. scabra is in fact A. asperrima Jacobi, whereas the "real" Agave scabra is some agave few people know? Breck >Dear Breck, > >Both names were validly published. The species Ortega named Agave scabra >was a completely different one from which Salm-Dyck named Agave scabra. So >Agave scabra Salm-Dyck requires a different name of which the earliest >available is Agave asperrima Jacobi. There is no reason to conserve Agave >scabra Salm-Dyck because the name had been used only relatively recently >and the species is again being called Agave asperrima Jacobi in the most >recent literature. ------------------------ Yahoo!
