Someone allegedly claimed that. In other people's experience 'Boncel' is a stable variety that reproduces truly from both offsets AND leaf cuttings. Apparently, someone was mistaken and used a 'retarded' (possibly by chemical means or other tricks similar to those used by the makers of the infamous cylindrica 'Skyline') form of regular cylindrica v. patula. Sans. cylindrica 'Skyline' in the hands of 'regular' plant lovers or laymen always produces normal cylindrica, either from offsets or leaf cuttings.

Thanks,Ida. How bizarre it looks! Do I understand correctly that the "bloated" plant produced the normal looking cylindrica pup?

  Hi all,

Probably this helps. To the best of my knowledge, it was not a hybrid (from a pollination) but from the failure of a tissue culture experiment of S. cylindrica. The result was like that, yes, a bit bloated :) but some people like it though.

It's been more than 4-5 years I guess by now and the pups remain like that.

  Best regards,
  Ida

Please have Peter dump the pot and take a new picture. I wanna see the rhizome connection between these 2 plants.

Here is Peter Heyens Boncel with a typical cylindrica offset.

For me, it is hard to believe the
story of getting normal cylindrica offsets from 'Boncel' leaf cuttings.
This variety reproduces truly from offsets in my collection with no signs

there a human eror involved with that leaf cutting experiment? If it
wasn't the case, how do you explain that the offsets remain
      dwarf?

I never even had boncel. however somebody whose name escapes my
overheated mind, DID get one, praps off eBay and reported that the pups
which emerged from a rooted leave were plain cylindrica. Perhaps there
are several different plants being sold under this name? in short, I
    dunno.
