As many of you will know, I have been working with GRID Logistics Inc. developing and promoting a project that would speed turn times for ships at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, and that would take the tens of thousands of containers, which are now mostly put on trucks for distribution within the region or transport to inland railheads, and put them on standard commercial trains for long-distance hauling, or onto our dedicated underground electric shuttle trains for regional delivery.
Our goal is to make freight movement clean and community-friendly, free roads of mad traffic, undermine the justifications for building more freeways, and keep the ports growing as export and import activity rises over the next half century.
This month, the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) is seeking public comment on its California Freight Mobility Plan. This is your opportunity to guide CalTrans toward a renewed concept in freight movement: underground freight pipelines. GRID Logistics, Inc., a Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator portfolio company, proposes a 137-mile, 15-foot diameter tunnel for electric drone trains to move containers between the San Pedro Bay port complex and inland freight consolidation warehouse centers.
The freight pipeline will be combined with a new ship berthing technology called the SuperDockTM to make San Pedro Bay the fastest, most preferred port complex for ships, while increasing jobs and drastically reducing diesel emissions. It will also eliminate the need for near-dock container transfer centers, such as the embattled Southern California International Gateway (SCIG), thus protecting the health and safety of communities located near freight corridors. In addition, no taxes will be required to build or maintain this infrastructure..
If you are a California resident, help us transform goods movement in California and make a it cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous state for ourselves and our children. We can make it happen! Go to http://tinyurl.com/GRID4CFMP to connect to more information regarding the GRID Logistics proposal, and to comment to CalTrans in support of this project. Also, spread the word to friends and family in Southern California to get this initiative off the ground. Together, we can move California into the 21st Century…. We don’t have to accept the status quo any longer!
