Hi All!
As if I didn't have
enough to do my local council in Gothenburg has
decided to build an new motorway tunnel under the river. I naturally
feel that this is a bad move but it comes as no surprise and has been
hovering in the air since about a year after they finished present
motorway tunnel under the river. I intend to do everything in my power to stop the
project.



For
some time now I have been pondering over a theory that congestion is
the only true limiting factor in unregulated traffic. It is based on
one of my fears about congestion charging. Simply applying a charge
to drive at certain times of the day will initially reduce the
congestion but this relief will soon be eaten up by the financially
stronger drivers driving more. In London the charge has been
accompanied by other measures reducing the amount of road space
allocated to cars mainly to the advantage of bus lanes. (Good stuff
Ken.) But it doesn't help me to prove my theory.



Has
anyone been thinking along similar lines or know of someone who has?
This idea seems so obvious that someone else must have already done
research on it. Ideally it would be best with empirical data from
a city that has used road space as a limiting factor to reduce
traffic. If a new road always generates more traffic the opposite
intuitively seems true. Taking away a lane will reduce traffic. Help
me prove this please.
