AGENCY ASSESSES MEASURES TO CUT EU TRANSPORT DEMAND
ENDS Europe DAILY, Monday 5 January 2009
------------------------------------------------------------
Policymakers should take better account of the impact of sectors such
as retail, business and tourism on the demand for transport in the
EU, according to a new study by the European environment agency (EEA).

Measures taken to reduce transport emissions to date have focussed
almost exclusively on the transport sector itself, and "ignore the
key drivers which create the demand for transport", says the agency's
report, which was published late last year.

To address the issue the EEA calls for "realistic" measures,
including pricing schemes for unsustainable transport modes and
improved consumer awareness of the carbon footprint of food and
travel choices.
