Thanks for the email and the questions. I am working on this program with Lloyd and others in Cape Town. We are very keen for this to go ahead in October 2009 and also for WCN to be on board too. We feel fairly confident that the City of CT (municipality) will come on board and we will also try to secure the interest of the provincial and national governments (as we had in Velo Mondial 2006). Regarding your questions:
 
1. Yes, this will be a trade show with the focus on city/ commuting bikes. Basically we want to allow the industry an opportunity to showcase their latest designs and equipment, and for them to be involved in the process of adapting this to modern city planning for bikes, with the hope that the big manufacturers will begin to tailor their investments and designs accordingly (i.e. more focus on city bikes, less on high performance racing machines). The industry partners can participate in the workshops, see the latest thinking on cities, and see how they can respond to adapting their market focus to a much broader mass-based utility one, more secure in the knowledge that the municipalities are moving city mobility in this direction.
2. We will hear all ideas for workshop design. I like the intimate version that you speak of, and we can then have perhaps 10 or 20 break away groups to keep it small. We will be able to support this, as we did at VM2006 (with 350 delegates from 41 countries and many successful breakaway groupings). The city and many planners here are very supportive of this and will assist this process.
3. ITDP and ICLEI will bring a certain NMT focus, but with the focus on redesigning of cities, we will also bring in other interest groups. New Mobility Alliance, for example, will be asked to be involved in this conference as well - and will bring much of the focus on the creation of hub networks in Cape Town: the interface of buses, trains, taxis and NMT to assist the process of reducing private cars in the city.
4. I would strongly welcome the involvement of the WCN Prague staff in this process. This will take on the feel of a WCN Africa, with the added involvement of the parties and organisations I mention above. We still need to work on a name for the conference that will encapsulate all the themes.

Hi Lloyd,

The following applies to an event in South Africa in either 2009 or 2010.

The list of organisations you name is quite impressive (I am organising something with a programme of ICLEI in Europe).  Municipal participation is crucial -  perhaps it could be a requirement for future TCCs? - and it could also be helpful to have the event in a mainstream venue, in conjunction with a corporate event.

I have a couple of questions:

* Could you provide more details on the trade show itself? Is it something like a South African version of Eurobike, i.e dealing primarily with sport, and secondly with recreation, or because of involvement of BEN does it have a defined focus (certain events, an identified part of the exhibition hall. etc.) on utility cycling/cycling a as primary transportation?

* Second, regarding the proposed design workshops, one way I saw this function well was at the TCC in Budapest. But this was a relatively intimate event with perhaps twenty or fewer active participants. If there is considerable interest in this activity (requiring multiple simultaneous sessions) will you be able to support it, in particular with local urban planning experts and city hall staff who are carfree-friendly?

* Third, will the involvement of ITDP, ICLEI or others ensure participation from motorised public transport actors?

While I feel Europe or N. America is the best place for a WCN AGM in the foreseeable future, I would be keen on the inclusion of a meeting at the event focused on steps leading to an eventual "WCN Africa".

Finally - sorry to repeat myself - I still consider it essential that all Prague-based WCN staff and volunteers are brought to work at the event. Among other things this will help the organisation itself have a strong presence - at least as defined as local-organisers.
