Hello fellow WCN folk, Almost ten years ago the 100th anniversary of what's widely believed to be the first recorded death by automobile (in North America) was commemorated with vigils across the continent. Sept. 13 of this year will be the 110th. The idea was, in particular, to bring a spotlight on the regional planning agencies (MPOs) which make the decision to keep expanding and intensifying car culture, something that's little understood by the general public. There's still a website online about this, but the campaign hasn't been active (despite some organizing around hanging a banner off the Golden Gate bridge on the 101st anniversary, particularly as that is highway 101). It's terribly close to the tenth anniversary, but I wonder if there's any interest in holding vigils again. It only takes one person to hold a vigil, and at least one (the more the better) to send press releases. Oh and of course, someone to maintain the website, which is basic HTML (presently I pay for and maintain it; used to also have the .org). http://rememberbliss.net/ This date, 13th of September, figured into the discussions of designating September as "Car-Free Month," and the fact that name of the one lost was Bliss adds to the marketing potential of the campaign. However it would be good to have a date of this sort that the entire world could observe. (See http://bclu.org/carfreemonth/ for historical perspective on efforts at that time.) Jason p.s. Of course, there may be others who were killed earlier not yet identified. Note that North America does include México, a simple geographical fact which many in the U.S. aren't aware of. And, clearly the injury and suffering caused by the automobile goes far beyond immediate deaths. (Many injuries and even fatalities are not recorded even today.) Rethinking the campaign from many angles is fair game. I just want to see something along these lines happen again. p.p.s. Apologies for having a yahoogroup for signing people up; riseup.net was not available on short notice when I resurrected the site last year.
