I think this was intended for the list... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Agustin G. Villegas <agvillegasv-/[email protected]> Date: Tue, Oct 6, 2009 at 6:35 PM Subject: Main Plaza of the city or town- car free, Towards Carfree Cities IX York - discussion To: [email protected] HI Randy et all: Maybe begin that the main plaza of the city or town be car free could be the first answer of the question 'How Do We Get There?' - as the main theme of Conference. In Mexico all the towns (more 5000) and big cities (more 30) have a Main Plaza sourrounded by the palace municipal, state or national as is the case and a cathedral or church following the model of millenary mexican cultures: teotihuacan, etc. It would be a good advance that the heart of the city the main plaza where most people converge will be carfree. As is the case of San Luis Potosi City since 1990. Tehn could be pedestrian axis that joints gartens, markets, schools, etc.. as is also the case of slp city av Juarez- Zaragoza- Hidalgo then could be eco- colonies that growing will be eco- towns or cities. Also focus in Towns not only in cities. Several towns in Mexico have more bicicle users comparative than cars than the big cities, and this is little know as example in Mexico san felipe, guanajuato suchil, durango delicias, chihuahua, so forth maybe is more easy begin in towns than in cities because are less big particular interest that prefer car industrie Also there are car free countries like Cuba Saludos- Regards ag villegas villarreal agvillegasv-/[email protected] --- On *Mon, 10/5/09, Randall Ghent <[email protected]>* wrote: From: Randall Ghent <[email protected]> Subject: [carfree_network] Towards Carfree Cities IX York - discussion To: carfree_network-/[email protected] Date: Monday, October 5, 2009, 8:12 AM Dear all, We're progressing steadily with plans for the 2010 conference, which will be held in York, UK from 28 June to 1 July (plus WCN annual meeting on 2 July) next year. The agreed subtitle is 'How Do We Get There?' - as the main theme will be focusing on bringing carfree communities to life. The conference will be centred on practical transition strategies, covering a range of issues from community-led street conversions to new carfree development to eco-cities, drawing on the past to build a sustainable future. We envisage the theoretical why and how morning lectures and workshops could build nicely into afternoon study tours and active street conversion exercises, perhaps culminating in panel debates on the mainstreaming of what we're promoting. Obviously we'll have a better feel for this following the call for programme proposals - to be issued in mid-October along with the opening of registration. In the meantime, we wanted to approach you more generally about ideas and objectives - what you'd like to see happen at the conference. We have our own ideas, but we'd also like to hear from you and generate a discussion on this list. Anyone wish to begin?
