- Monthly News looks to the future

2011 holds some changes for the World Carfree Monthly News. Graphic
enhancements and improvements are to be expected, and we will continue to
develop the various language editions as well as the readership. This month
we inaugurate a new language edition: Italian. Signups for this version are
available, the Italian version will be released in approximately one week.
Readers are encouraged to click on the flags to find information in their

- Injury Prevention Research. At the Otago University in Dunedin, New
Zealand, researchers are looking for interventions that can lead to a
reduction of driving among young people. While focusing on injury
prevention, they are interested in interventive programmes that other towns
have implemented. Details on failed experiments are also welcome. Please

- Interest is sought for two ARC-funded full-time PhD scholarships
(2011-2013) as part of a Discovery research project titled "Spatial Network
Analysis for Multimodal Urban Transport Systems" (SNAMUTS). One candidate
will be based at RMIT University in Melbourne and focus on innovative public
transport policy. The other candidate will be based at Curtin University in
Perth and focus on the use of interactive modelling tools in a planning
context. Candidates with suitable background may get in touch with Dr Jan

- Transport & Environment is currently seeking two highly-motivated policy
officers to widen its team. One will be in charge of cars and CO2
campaigning, while the other will be mainly dealing with road freight.
Strategic thinking and highly-developed networking are key. Interest sought
through December 15.

Highway construction alert in Italy!

Help stop the "Gronda of Genova" that is the proposed highway bypass aimed
at the mountains surrounding Genova above the Ligurian coast. The
construction would involve double tunnels 23 km long and cost over 5 billion
Euros with construction lasting 8 years. In an already congested city, this
would not bring any real improvement to the region, and only drain money
from other far more beneficial projects.

While the municipality is keen on going ahead with the proposed development,
there is a resistance movement gathering momentum. Genova based WWF Liguria
and Green Mobility have developed an informational site and are attempting
to collect speed and partners in attempting to get a full-fledged public
debate on the issue.

- Highway plans put on hold in Moscow. In the Russian capital president
Medvedev suspended a motorway plan after a high level of protest surrounded
it. Meanwhile journalist Oleg Kashin, who was covering the protests, was

- Portland cycling continues to see rise in activity. The newest report by
the Portland Bureau of Transportation shows that cycling continues to draw
more adherents. The four most cycle-friendly bridges measured 14% of all
vehicle crossings as being by cyclists. Southwest Portland has a 19% growth
in cycling, the top number in the city.

- Bike City on the move. Coming close to realisation, after years of
preparation, a bicycle community - free of cars - plans a groundbreaking of
the first phase of the project this December. 160 acres are being built on
in a forested area of South Carolina, USA. With bicycles and kayaks for
rent, it is also hoping to draw eco-tourists.

- Zurich tightens parking policy. Residents of Zurich, Switzerland voted in
a referendum on parking policy guidelines, which specifies a standard
threshold as well as a 10% limited version in the downtown areas, allowing
only 1 parking space per 1200 square meters.

- Japan and India are jointly forging a plan for a green city network along
the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor. The target area spans six Indian
states and includes 24 cities and will involve large investments in green
technologies. Cycling, walking and recycling are all to be prioritised.
Completion is expected in 5 to 7 years.

visits a carlite waterfront Amsterdam neighborhood, known as "Java" and
develops immediate affinity for this child-friendly way of life, and brings
a heart-warming report back home to California.

- Visual presentation of Bike share systems. The UCL Centre for Advanced
Spatial Analysis developed this snappy online visual tour of bike share
systems around the world. This tour is now coming to a computer near you.

- A report by the "Forum for the Future" calls for radical design of cities
to be able to accommodate population growth and megacities. The colourful
"Megacities on the Move" report may be downloaded from the
