- Towards Carfree Cities 2011 in Mexico

The tenth Towards Carfree Cities Conference will be held in
Guadalajara, Mexico, from 5 to 9 September 2011. The theme this year
is "Building Carfree Cities for the People, by the People", with a
focus on citizen participation and the sharing of experiences between
campaigners from around the world.

We have now issued a general Call for Programme Proposals and separate
Call for Academic Papers. If you have an idea for a presentation,
workshop or other conference activity, we'd love to hear from you by
25 February (papers) or 28 February (all other proposals). For more

If you are interested in hosting the 2012 conference, please consult

The World Carfree Network's Steering Committee will discuss the

The World Carfree Monthly News is looking to enhance its bulletin look
and Carbusters magazine and the website could also could use a hand in
their redesign. So please let us know if your dedication to carfree
issues intersects with your skills in design!

The type of people we are looking for are those who are enthusiastic
about the movement and are willing to work on a volunteer basis - yet
keeping also in mind that when funding becomes available, there could
be future financial rewards.

doing web design, graphics for carbusters or all of the above! Write

- In 2011 the International Walk21 Conference is being hosted by Metro
Vancouver, scheduled for Oct 3-5. In focus are the best practices for
urban design, transportation mobility, and health promotion. The

- Sunday Streets in 2011 has expanded since its introduction with 3
events in San Francisco in 2008. There will be nine or more events
this year, with the next dates set at March 20 and April 10.

Time to tell the mayor of Toronto why bikes are GOOD!

As readers of this newsletter will have previously learned, the mayor
of Toronto has still not figured out a few things about urban cycling.
After mayor Rob Ford commented "I can't support bike lanes. Roads are
built for buses, cars, and trucks" people saw the writing on the wall,
and activists began to scratch their heads for ideas.

Tour d'Afrique, a Canadian company that offers bike tours around the
world, has launched a Facebook contest to coincide with its North
American tour, as it passes through Toronto. All the best ideas on how
to persuade Ford to take an improved stance on cycling are being
collected, and the best ideas will be turned into reality.

Read on to participate and for a chance to win a free book from Bike
Snob NYC. Although the contest is formally being closed at the
beginning of February, readers of World Carfree Monthly Newsletter
have been invited to participate past the deadline. But hurry on over!

- In London the Barclays bicycle superhighways are reported to having
effected noticeable change. Recent figures show that the number of
cyclists using these routes has increased between 70% and 100%. These
are the first two completed superhighways out of a planned 12.

- 'SolaRoad' is planned as a pilot project in Holland in 2012. It is a
bicycle path with solar cells and an expected electricity output of 50
kWh per metre. This will have the potential to generate a large
quantity of sustainable electricity if expanded as a project.

- French fashion stylist Laurence Renard was killed by an oncoming
truck in New York City.

-In the UK, Lancashire County Council have committed £9 m to turning
every residential street for their 1.2 million residents into a 20 mph
limit over the next two years.

- Arizona's One Street reports about its trip to Uganda, where 200
women were able to learn about Bicycle repair, as early stages of its
Social Bike Business Program were launched. The local organisation
Ride 4 a Woman (R4W) brought the attendees together, in a village in
the south-east of the country. One Street is also helping to launch
Social Bike programs in Los Angeles, Prague, Budapest and elsewhere.
