From Bulgaria to London on EuroVelo routes

But this is no ordinary marathon. They expect th= at it will take them 55 days, passing through 11 countries and covering ove= r 4,000 km to reach their destination =96 the opening of the Olympics in Lo= ndon! The ECF is regularly contacted about incredible cycle trips that are organi= sed by experienced (and on occasions, not so experienced!) cyclists all in = the name of promoting good causes or raising money for charity. Unfortunat= ely, there are too many to refer to them all but we will feature some examp= les from time to time to give an idea of the kind of feats that are being u= ndertaken. =91The Alternative Olympic Torch Relay for Road Peace=92, was inspired by = Mladen Belchev =96 a veteran Bulgarian non-professional cyclist and sportsm= an. His daughter Ekaterina started organising the marathon after he involve= d in a nasty accident when he was hit by a motorbike whilst out cycling in = 2011. He is still recovering and has lost the use of his left arm but he w= ill still take part in the Euro Marathon in a recumbent tricycle. The organisers hope that the Euro Marathon will raise awareness about road = safety and celebrate the bicycle as a sustainable and healthy choice of tra= nsport in cities and for tourism. Lots of events are planned in the cities = through which they pass and a film crew will document the efforts of Mladen= and his team. The riders will be using EuroVelo, the European cycle route network, wherev= er possible. Primarily EuroVelo 6 =96 Atlantic =96 Black Sea and EuroVelo = 5 =96 Via Romea Francigena.
