Hi folks,

If you're having trouble finding hosts, I want to suggest that, in
addition to the resources on the venezia2012.it site, you might want to
take a look at AirBnb.com for relatively cheap places to stay in Venice,
or anywhere else in Europe for that matter. You can find anything from
a futon to sleep on to whole apartments and houses. This worked out
great for me and my wife on our recent trip.

If I might editorialize just a bit, I'll add that while Venice is
extremely charming, beautiful, and refreshingly car-free, I'm not sure
it's the ideal model for future car-free cities, with all the canals,
bridges which are not accessible to disabled people, and the need to use
motorized boats to bring anything in and out. The vast majority of its
residents are working in jobs related to tourism, which is the city's
lifeblood. It's a unique place which I'm not sure can be replicated.
But your imagination may be better than mine.

At any rate, it will be a great place for a conference. I'd love to be
able to attend, but our travel budget can't accommodate two trips to
Europe in the same year. If the conference were ever held in the U.S.
again, though, I would definitely try to make it. You might consider
Chicago in the future; it's centrally located in the U.S. and, while we
have made a lot of progress towards reducing automobile hegemony in the
last few years, we have an awfully long way to go.

Keep up the great work!

Dan

just to add one thing: yes the Degrowth conference organisers are indeed
looking for homestays to help participants lower their costs of
visiting. I am also trying to get in touch with the university that
hosts the programme, to see if they can offer us room to meet apart from
the conference programme.
